"A Place Of One's Own"
Creating a quiet spot for yourself in your bustling household may seem
impossible, but all you need is a corner, a curtain, a few pieces of furniture
and an agreement from your family.
Your first
step is to make a promise to yourself, says Robin Lennon, owner of Robin
Lennon Inner Designs based in New York City and New Jersey.
"Mothers think that if they take time for themselves, they're being selfish.
But actually, you'll be more relaxed and more available if you make a place
to escape and regroup."
Next, explain your plan to family members, and ask for their support. Then look around your home for the most logical and nurturing place to be.
You don't have to position yourself over the garage or in a linen closet to be
out of the way--a niche in front of a window or in a corner will do. Keep your space simple, not cluttered. You'll need a chaise or a comfortable
chair with ottoman, a small table or desk and a bookcase. Set up a standing
screen or hang curtains from the ceiling to keep out the sound and help
create the illusion of a room. Decorate with things that you love-photos or
paintings that remind you of places you want to go or things you value in
life. Add materials that will nurture you--books, art supplies, a journal to
write in, a hobby or craft to work on. Embellish your space with scented candles, fresh flowers or potpourri. Dim
the lights. Play music that inspires you--Japanese flute, Marvin Gaye or
whatever makes you tick. And then...step in. Even ten minutes should give you back yourself.
